A Last‑Minute Overnight Adventure to Atlanta, Ga by Ty — Gallivant Tours Travel

Some trips take months to plan… and others start with one simple question from my sister: “Will you go with me to Atlanta?” My answer? “When shall I be ready!”

This spontaneous overnight getaway from Greensboro to Atlanta turned out to be quick, easy, and full of unexpected fun — the perfect reminder that sometimes the best adventures are the ones you don’t overthink.

🕒 Travel Time & Transportation

Departure: Thursday evening, 6:00 PM Arrival: Southside Atlanta (Airport area) around midnight Mode of Transportation: Car

The drive was smooth for the most part. We hit light traffic in Gastonia, NC, but nothing major. Once we crossed into Georgia, the roads opened up and the ride felt easy. For a Thursday night in Atlanta, traffic was surprisingly calm — maybe the perfect timing, or maybe the Friday before Mother’s Day kept people off the roads.

🏨 Where We Stayed

Hotel: Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott — Atlanta Airport South / Sullivan Road Cost: $125 Parking: $18 (keycard‑controlled horseshoe lot) Breakfast: Complimentary

The hotel was convenient for a quick overnight stay, but it definitely had some quirks.

The Good

  • Easy parking with keycard access

  • Free breakfast

  • Room included a microwave, mini fridge, and mini Keurig with coffee pods and tea

  • Comfortable bed and a clean space

The Not‑So‑Good

  • Elevators were loud, making a scratching, hollering noise

  • Side entrance had mold and peeling wallpaper, likely from water damage

  • A turbo fan was running in that corner to dry things out

  • Bathroom was basic — nothing special, but functional

For a one‑night stay, it served its purpose. Not a luxury experience, but it got the job done.

🛩️ Friday Morning: Delta Flight Museum Surplus Sale

Friday morning, we headed to the Delta Flight Museum for their monthly Surplus Sale, held every second Friday from 9 AM to 2 PM.

What to Expect

  • Free parking

  • Free entry to the sale

  • Museum admission and the 747‑400 “Ship 6301” tour cost extra

  • Only a few people allowed inside at a time due to building capacity

  • A line forms early, but it moves steadily

What They Sell

Aviation lovers, this is your spot. Items ranged from:

  • Books

  • Pins

  • Cups

  • T‑shirts

  • Lanyards

  • Delta memorabilia

  • Airplane parts (yes — actual parts!)

  • Engine blades

  • Beverage carts

Everything was reasonably priced, and I walked away with:

  • AirTran patch

  • 2 tumblers

  • 1 glass

  • Delta puzzle packet

  • Delta SkyMiles wallet

Total: Under $40 A steal for aviation collectibles.

After shopping, we toured the retired Boeing 747‑400, which was a highlight — massive, historic, and beautifully preserved.

🍔 Lunch Stop: Checkers in Suwanee

After leaving the museum, we drove up to Lawrenceville–Suwanee Road off I‑85 for lunch at Checkers. Quick, easy, and exactly what we needed before hitting the road back to North Carolina.

We also filled up the tank — gas totaled $170 for the round trip.

🚗 The Drive Back

We left Atlanta around 1:30 PM and made great time.

  • Arrived in Charlotte: 5:00 PM (Stopped to visit family — no rush, just vibes)

  • Left Charlotte: 7:30 PM

  • Arrived back in Greensboro: 9:15 PM

Traffic was light the entire way, making the return trip smooth and relaxed.

🌤️ Weather

  • Thursday night: Clear skies, easy driving

  • Friday morning/afternoon: Light traffic, mild weather

  • Overall: Perfect conditions for a quick turnaround trip

🧳 Type of Vacation

This was a spontaneous, quick‑turnaround, light‑adventure trip. Perfect for:

  • Siblings

  • Friends

  • Aviation lovers

  • Anyone who enjoys last‑minute road trips

Final Thoughts from Ty

This overnight trip to Atlanta reminded me why I love spontaneous travel. No overthinking, no strict itinerary — just good company, smooth roads, and a fun experience at the Delta Surplus Sale.

Sometimes the best memories come from the trips you didn’t plan weeks. And with Atlanta only a few hours away, it’s the perfect destination for a quick getaway from North Carolina.
